Today was a day filled with science [and rain, but it's winter in Washington so that's no shocker!].
Today we continued our exploration of food chemistry by looking at how our food actually moves through our body - the digestive system! We watched a quick video that talks about the parts of the digestive system and the job that each part has. You can view it at home HERE. We looked at what inputs go into our body as well as what comes out - and yes, there is more than just poop (though the kids found it much funnier to think poop was the only thing!). On your planner for tonight, write the two types of energy that come out of our system for bonus points!
This afternoon we took at look at different nutrients we haven't studied yet. So far today we looked at fat, protein, and carbohydrates (starch and glucose). Today we broke into small groups and became "experts" on a vitamin or mineral that is important to our body. Students made posters that explain how the nutrient is helpful to our bodies and what foods contain the vitamins or minerals. Unfinished posters are coming home tonight to get finished and ready to present tomorrow - be on the lookout for those!
Tomorrow is also our first "walking" trip to the North Beach ravine. PLEASE make sure that students are dressed for the weather - we are going rain or shine! - with rain boots, an extra pair of socks, and waterproof jackets. Hats and gloves are encouraged as well!

Tuesday
Well, we blinked again and another day is over! These days are just FLYING right by us!!
Today we kept going with our first science kits, circuits and pathways, and I was really impressed that the students were able to find ALL 4 ways to use the motor, wires, and a d-cell battery to make the motor spin! Ask your student to draw a diagram for you in their planner for Tuesday. If they can, there will be extra points for their tables!
Today we continued our first full week with math, library check out (we have it every Tuesday!), and reading workshop. I started reading with kids to find out more about them as readers as well as how their current reading level is. I will try to get through the whole class by next week (fingers are crossed that works out) so that everyone will get a reading partner, we can start reading groups, and we can get into our real groove of reading workshop - I can't wait!
I am SO impressed with what a wonderful class this is - we are getting compliments left and right! Let's keep that momemtum going through the year, P4!

MAP Testing Monday - Reading
The last of the BIG school tests are finally here and we are ready! Reading MAP tests will be Monday afternoon from 2-3:30. Please be sure that students are here with a good breakfast, hearty lunch, and have had a good night's sleep!
Pet adoptions were today and 4 ladies went home with new family members. We still have fish and snails available for adoption, if you're interested. We have to have the pets adopted by Wednesday so that we can have our science kits returned the next day.
Just a quick reminder before you're off for the weekend, that next weekend is Memorial Day weekend (yes, it's that time already!) and so there is no school next Friday or the following Monday. YAY! :)
Enjoy your weekend and hopefully we get some nice weather!

Pet Adoption
Our cloud fish, pond snails, crickets, and isopods are ready for their forever home with your family! Students came home today with an adoption form and they are first come first serve, with an adoption plan AND parent permission slip attached. I know several of our girls are literally shaking with excitement so I know that our organisms are going to be safe and happy.
Today was also our MAP test - yes, another test! Students did an AWESOME job working on that for almost an hour and a half for math. Our last MAP test for reading is next Monday so please make sure that your student is here and ready to do their best!

Bill Nye The Science Guy!
I could not believe my ears when the students had NO idea who Bill Nye was! I grew up with him in my schools so I knew that today was the perfect day to introduce them to Bill Nye. Science has been crazy lately, getting our crickets, isopods and cloudfish into their new homes so the video was the perfect tie into our science unit and gave students something they could work on while I was getting the animals ready.

Writing up a Storm!
In P4 we are working on building our writing stamina. Reading... that comes SO easily to most of the students that they could read all day! Writing, however, is another story. Writing is so easy to get the dreaded "writer's block" where we cannot think of anything to write, no matter how many ideas we are given.
SO, to help with that, all of the students have made purple writing folders which they will be taking home every night (so be on the lookout for them!) to do some writing. This week I am asking that students write for at least 20 minutes per night to build their writing stamina and realize how much they really have to say. After checking them off this morning I am VERY impressed with the level of writing that they have been hiding this year! Their stories were fantastic, especially for only 20 minutes of writing! I can't wait to see more of that in their classroom writing this year and as we get closer to the MSP in late April and early May.
Today we also took our second science CBA, comparing fats and protein nutrients we have been studying this trimester in science. Students did a great job writing and working on their CBA and I'm interested to see what the students came up with.
This is our last week for our current science kit (food chemistry) and if you're interested in coming in to help inventory the kit Thursday or Friday afternoon that would be a HUGE help! The inventory shouldn't take more than an hour (closer to 30 minutes usually) and can be done in our class. If you're interested in helping with that, please email me and let me know. Welcome Back!
Wow, that long weekend was nice! Four full days off, PLUS the half day... couldn't have asked for a more relaxing weekend! I hope you all had a wonderful time off as well!
Today there is a LOT coming home for parent eyes! We have several field trips coming up in March and early April so as opposed to sending one form after another home, we decided to send home packets of permissions slips (3) so that one check or set of cash can be sent in with all three permission slips signed. ALL of the slips will be due March 12th back to me so that we can make sure we have enough chaperones and everyone is ready to go.
Speaking of chaperones, we have a field trip this Friday and we are in need of AT LEAST one more chaperone to make sure we can go on the trip. We are going to Meany Hall at UW to see Black Grace, an aboriginal dance production. It is sure to be a great show and if you're interested in chaperoning and haven't already signed up please shoot me an email so that I can get everything set up.
Book orders are also coming home today and will be due February 26th (next Tuesday). Ordering online this month gets our class and you a free book so that is a great way to order. Checks and paper book orders are absolutely fine as well. Thanks for supporting our classroom!

Tuesday Grumbles
Getting back into the swing of school and work is a hard thing for everyone! I know I had a hard time giving up summer break but the time has come to be back in school and our class is having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. The grumbles and complaints were out in full force today and that is something we will continue to work on as we get back into "school mode".
I've been letting the kids know that when they are grumbling from the start of the day, it sets a bad tone for their day from the minute they walk in the door and that's not what we want! We want HAPPY students who are excited to be here! I know I am excited, so I want to see that excitement from them! :) Things that can help are making sure your student gets a full night's sleep each night and sending students with healthy snacks and lunches that are full of nutrients, like protein, so they stay full. As growing students I know sometimes food goes super fast, especially for those kiddos who are just growing like weeds!, but that healthy snack will help manage that hunger. And as a reminder, peanut and nut products are not allowed in our room due to severe allergies. Thanks! :)
Science was a LOT of fun today! Students got to experiment with a D-cell battery and small motor with wires to get the motor shaft to spin! Every group was successful and it was a great time! For an extra $10, have your student draw a diagram of one way they connected the battery and motor so that it WOULD spin! :)
Math homework came home today so have an eye out for that.
Also, tomorrow during writing we will be decorating our writer's notebooks so I encourage everyone to bring pictures, magazine cutouts, stickers, etc to decorate and personalize those notebooks!
